India’s Coal Production Grows 7.10% In a Year

In May, domestic coal production increased 7.10% year over year to 76.26 million tonnes (MT). According to a statement from the coal ministry, India produced 71.21 MT of coal in the same month in 2022. It further said that the Ministry of Coal has obtained a commendable achievement with a substantial increase in the overall production of coal during May 23. It surpassed the production of coal on May 22 which was 71.21 MT and reached 76.26 MT.

Speaking of overall coal production in April-May, it jumped from 138.41 MT to 149.41 MT in the time span of one year. In the previous month, Coal India Ltd produced 59.94 MT of coal, 149.41 MT in the year-ago period.

Coal dispatch increased last month by 5.70% to 82.22 MT from 77.79 MT in May 2022 owing to improved first-mile connectivity infrastructure. First-mile connectivity describes the movement of coal from mines to distribution centres. The total coal dispatch for April and May of FY24 was 162.44 MT, up from 149.76 MT at the same time last year.

According to the ministry, the increase in offtake has left a comfortable coal stock position, ensuring a steady supply of coal at pithead stocks at CIL, SCCL, the stock at TPP(DCB), etc. The total coal stock increased by 35.48% to 112.41 MT on May 31, 2023, from 82.97 MT on May 31, 2022.

The coal stock position has strengthened the nation’s ability to handle unanticipated energy demand changes, ensuring that the country’s energy needs will be met. Due to the initiative taken by the ministry to improve rail connectivity infrastructure under PM Gati Shakti, the availability of coal rakes for coal transportation has remained consistently good throughout this time.
