Act East Policy: NFR Will Benefit From A New Rail Line Connecting Mizoram To The Myanmar Border

Indian Railways intends to connect the Myanmar border in Mizoram by rail as part of the Act East Policy. The Final Location Survey (FLS) of the 223 km stretch between Sairang (Aizawl) and Hbichhuah in Mizoram, close to the Myanmar border, has recently received approval from the Railway Board. According to a press release from NFR, the Ministry of Railways decided to take on the project in light of the area’s strategic importance and potential for economic growth.

This initiative will open up a second route to Northeast India via Hbichhuah, which is anticipated to reduce the price and duration of shipping goods from Myanmar’s Sittwe Port to the Northeast.

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, recently opened the Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

The NFR is currently working on a 51.38-km broad-gauge railroad line project between Bairabi and Sairang, and work is moving along quickly. The 111 km long Imphal-Moreh railway line connectivity project along the Myanmar Border’s final location survey is also anticipated to be finished soon.

According to official sources, the new broad-gauge railway line will significantly improve trade connectivity and ties between India and Myanmar as well as the surrounding area.
