Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary died of heart attack during Congress-led Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab this morning.

MP Chaudhary Suffered Heart Attack

During the Punjab-leg of the Yatra, Santokh Singh Chaudhary collapsed in Phillaur. Mr. Chaudhary was rushed to the hospital in Phagwara where he died later.

In a tweet, ANI shared the visuals when the Congress MP collapsed. It wrote, “#WATCH | Ludhiana, Punjab: Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary was rushed to a hospital in an ambulance after he collapsed while walking during Bharat Jodo Yatra today. He passed away soon after.”

Congress Suspends The Yatra Ahead MP’s Demise

Rahul Gandhi also rushed to the hospital where the veteran Congress leader was taken, said a party leader.

The Yatra has been suspended for now.

Rahul resumed the Yatra from Ladhowal in the morning and had walked through Phillaur, the constituency represented by Chaudhary’s son Vikramjit Singh in Punjab assembly.

Later, when Yatra was on way to Goraya, Mr. Chaudhary collapsed. He was rushed to Virk Hospital Phagwara. “Most likely he suffered heart attack,” said Dr Jasjit Singh Virk who attended the Congress MP.

Rahul Gandhi has left the Yatra midway and is likely to reach Chaudhary’s residence in Jalandhar.

Leaders Extend Their Condolences

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said Mr. Chaudhary’s death is a “great blow to the party and organisation”.

“Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the untimely passing away of our MP, Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary. His loss is a great blow to the party and organisation. In this hour of grief, my heart goes out to his family, friends and followers. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his anguish over his death in a tweet in Punjabi.
