India Is Promoted By Modi As A “Reliable” Basis For Chip Manufacturing

On Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to transform his nation into a “reliable” hub for the semiconductor sector as the U.S.-China trade war changes the world’s supply of chips.

“As India moves forward on the path of reform, new opportunities will be created,” Modi said in a speech to open SemiconIndia, a chip industry event in Gandhinagar, in his western home state of Gujarat. “India is becoming an excellent conductor for semiconductor investments.”

Gujarat wants to establish itself as a new hub for semiconductor businesses. The event, which is sponsored by the government, follows one that was held in Bengaluru, a southern IT powerhouse, last year.

Modi said that at last year’s SemiconIndia, many were asking why they should invest in India. “Now,” he said, “the question has become, ‘Why not invest in India?'”

Additionally on Friday, the largest design center in the world will be built in Bengaluru by US chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which made the announcement at SemiconIndia.

With the Make in India plan, Modi has been working since taking office in 2014 to transform India into a developed manufacturing sector. The production of industrial items like electric cars is expanding.

India is currently making more of an effort to entice high-technology enterprises. The government said that it will invest 760 billion rupees ($9.24 billion) in 2021 to encourage domestic production in the semiconductor and liquid-crystal display industries.

By 2047, Modi’s ambitious goals called for India to join the industrialized nations. India already surpassed its erstwhile colonial master, Britain, in terms of nominal gross domestic output last year. Japan and Germany are under attack.

“We are continuously carrying out policy reforms to accelerate the growth of the country’s semiconductor sector,” the prime minister said on Friday.

In order to draw in more semiconductor industry, experts point out that India must to strengthen its human resources and infrastructure. The best institutes in the nation, such the Indian Institutes of Technology, certainly generate talented individuals, but many of them have chosen to pursue jobs in the United States and other foreign countries.

The Modi administration’s strategy of encouraging semiconductors and other industries is part of an endeavor to boost employment and reduce the exodus of skilled workers.

According to the company’s news release, AMD stated in its announcement on Friday that the new campus slated to open in Bengaluru will generate 3,000 engineering employment within five years.

At his SemiconIndia speech, Modi emphasised the potential of India in the current global context.

“The world needs a reliable supply chain,” he said. “Who can be a more trusted partner than the world’s largest democracy?”
