India Leads The Way, With Over 40 Million Downloads Of Meta’s Threads On Day 1

According to data compiled by reputed measuring firm Sensor Tower, Meta’s release of the Threads mobile app marked a critical milestone in app history. Threads clearly had a notable success on its debut day, with an amazing figure of nearly 40 million downloads worldwide. This statistic set a new milestone, towering beyond other launches in the past decade.

The breakdown of downloads by operating system revealed a preference for Android over iOS, with the former accounting for 75% of overall downloads. The distribution of these downloads on an international scale resulted in India and Brazil dominating, with 22% and 16% of total downloads, respectively. The United States, on the other hand, accounted for a significant portion, with approximately 5.5 million downloads.

Threads surpassed major launch performances such as Pokemon GO and Call of Duty Mobile, both of which had fewer than 20 million downloads on their first days. In comparison to other recently launched social media applications, Threads has a significant lead, as evidenced by its nearest competition, Truth Social, which received around 1,44,000 downloads on its launch day of February 21, 2022. Social media veterans Facebook and Instagram dominate the scoreboard of the most worldwide Monthly Active Users (MAUs), followed by growing favorites such as TikTok, Snap Inc., Twitter, and BeReal.

Profiling Threads’ user base provides fascinating insights. A large proportion of Thread users (96%), were identified to be concurrently active on Instagram. Furthermore, there were large overlaps for WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, with 80%, 58%, and 56%, respectively. Instagram revealed concurrent user engagement, which is similar to Threads, with 79% of its users active on WhatsApp. Twitter, on the other hand, has an 83% user overlap with Instagram and a 49% overlap with Facebook.

The Threads app accounted for 14% of all app installations in the United States yesterday, according to application install statistics. The trend was even clearer in the United Kingdom and Brazil, where Threads accounted for 20% and 26% of total installs, respectively.

Through Sensor Tower’s unique mobile device panel, an analysis of the demographics of Threads users found a lean toward male participation. Approximately 68% of the Threads user base is male, with 32% identifying as female. In terms of age groupings, the male user base was most dense between the ages of 25 and 35, with 28% participation. Users aged 18 to 25 represented 11% of males and slightly more than 5% of females. Users over the age of 45 were in the minority, with males accounting for 3% and females accounting for less than 2%.
