India Provides $1 Million To Support Hindi Language Promotion At UN

India has given the United Nations $1,000,000 as part of a campaign to encourage the use of Hindi at the international agency.

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, presented Melissa Fleming, Under Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, with a cheque for the expansion of Hindi usage within the UN.

“Supporting linguistic diversity! PR @ruchirakamboj presented USG @MelissaFleming with a $1,000,000 cheque to increase the use of #Hindi at the @UN. We are removing obstacles and expanding public outreach through the Hindi@UN programme, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN stated in a tweet.

Kamboj stated that this is a start in the direction of encouraging inclusive conversation and understanding.

In this instance, Ambassador Kamboj noted, “Efforts of the United Nations to mainstream and consolidate news and multimedia content in the Hindi language have been appreciated in India and in countries where a Hindi-speaking population resides,” as stated in the announcement.

She continued by saying that the Government of India would keep promoting the use of Hindi at the UN for this purpose. India is happy to collaborate with the UN, according to the press release.
With the aim of increasing the United Nations’ public outreach in the Hindi language and raising awareness of global issues among the millions of Hindi-speaking people around the world, the Hindi@UN project was launched in 2018 in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information.

The following platforms are used to spread The UN News in Hindi: The UN News website (https://news.un.org/hi/), the UN Instagram account “unitednationshindi,” the UN Facebook page in Hindi, and a weekly UN News-Hindi audio bulletin (https://soundcloud.com/un-news-hindi) are all available in Hindi.

The UN Hindi social media accounts currently have 50,000 followers on Twitter, 29,000 followers on Instagram, and 15,000 followers on Facebook. They publish about 1000 posts annually. With 1.3 million annual impressions, the Hindi UN News website continues to rank among the top 10 in internet search engines.
