Who Wore What at MET GALA 2023
Despite predictions of AAP’s decline, the party’s success in Jalandhar shows a resurgence. However, it remains to be seen whether this success can be replicated in other constituencies in the 2024 parliamentary elections, potentially reshaping Punjab’s political landscape.
The Jalandhar by-election results show a significant shift in Punjab’s political landscape, moving away from religion- based politics towards an egalitarian society. The defeat of Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress indicates a rejection of religion-based and corrupt practices, ushering a new era.
Radical agenda was strongly rebuffed as pro-Khalistan leader Simranjit Singh Mann’s party suffered a substantial loss. This defeat underlines that the Punjab electorate does not support extremist ideologies, preferring peace and secularism over divisive politics.
AAP’s victory in the by-election could be attributed partly to the freebies offered, such as the zero-bill policy for electricity. However, this approach may pose an economic burden on the already debt-ridden state, further straining Punjab’s limited resources.
While AAP’s anti-corruption measures have been well- received, there is an urgent need to shift focus towards employment generation and economic development. The victory, though promising, doesn’t lessen the importance of capacity-building and job creation for the state.
