Ramesh Bais Replaces Bhagat Singh Koshyari As Maharashtra Governor After His Resignation

President Droupadi Murmu has made crucial constitutional appointments today as 12 states including Maharashtra have got a new Governor. Moreover, the president has also appointed a new Lieutenant Governor for the Union Territory of Ladakh. Ahead of the new appointments by President Murmu, the former Jharkhand governor, Ramesh Bais is set to replace Bhagat Singh Koshyari as the new Maharashtra Governor.

Koshyari wished to step down from his post

In January, the 88-year-old, Koshyari told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he wished to step down from the top post.

In an official statement issued by Raj Bhavan, it said, “Governor Koshyari has expressed his desire to spend the rest of his life in reading, writing and other leisurely activities.”

Bhagat Singh Koshiyari is an RSS veteran. He has also served as a chief minister and an MP in both Houses of Parliament and was appointed Governor in 2019. During his political tenure, he frequently hit headlines over his multiple run-ins with the Uddhav Thackeray government and his controversial statements.

Moreover, the Uddhav Thackeray-led government and the Raj Bhavan clashed on several issues, including the reopening of temples after the Covid pandemic, the refusal of a state plane for Koshyari’s visit to Dehradun and a special Assembly session following the rape and murder of a woman in Mumbai’s Sakinaka.

Last year in November, the RSS veteran sparked a row when Koshyari said that Chhatrapati Shivaji was “an icon of the old days”. Several BJP leaders had to jump into the firefight as the political opposition accused the Governor of insulting the Maratha leader. Earlier, he courted controversy when he said Maharashtra will have no money left if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis leave.
