Republic Day plans can be washed away ahead of heavy rainfall in Northern region, reports IMD

Ahead of the bone-chilling cold waves prevailing in the northern region, several parts are likely to experience some relief from the same, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the northern region will observe heavy rainfall and hailstorms in the next 72 hours due to a western cyclonic disturbance, the IMD added.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and hail may lash isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh.

Thunderstorms and lightning may pelt isolated places over Delhi and East Rajasthan.

Heavy rainfall or snowfall is expected at isolated places over Jammu- Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Scattered showers with thunderstorms may occur over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, East Uttar Pradesh and Lakshadweep.

Isolated rains with thunderstorms are forecast over East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe.

Shallow to moderate fog is possible at isolated places over North India, Central India, East India and Northeast India in the morning hours.

Western Disturbance Leads to Rainfall

Due to Western cyclonic disturbance, light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall is very likely over the Western Himalayan Region. Its intensity and distribution are likely to increase thereafter to fairly widespread to widespread rainfall or snowfall from January 25-26.

Scattered to fairly widespread light rains accompanied by thunderstorms may lash Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh from January 25 to January 26. Isolated light rain or drizzle is forecast over Delhi from January 25 to January 26.

Further, isolated hailstorms may occur over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on January 24 and 25; and over Uttar Pradesh on January 25. Light isolated rains or thundershowers are also forecast over Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan from January 25 to 26; and over West Rajasthan on January 25 and 27.

IMD on Weather Report

Republic Day plans can be washed away in the rain. According to the IMD, it will be cloudy throughout the day in Delhi and it may rain in some places. Delhi’s meteorological station, Safdarjung Observatory, recorded a minimum temperature of 12.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

A change in weather patterns can be seen in North India today. There may be heavy snowfall and rain in the mountains of Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 25.

Possibility of rain and thundershowers till January 26 in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, the report added.

The IMD has predicted dense fog in the morning and night at many places including Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. Visibility can be very low due to fog. Further, the weather agency predicted rainfall in places like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, North Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.
