GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to create an environment for organ transplantation in the state in an effort to address the worrisome increase in traffic accidents and enhance healthcare services.
The CM emphasized the greater frequency of road accidents in Assam, which result in the loss of many lives each year, during his speech at the Swasthya Seva Utsav.
The Assam administration seeks to emulate the achievements of states where organ transplantation has made considerable strides, such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Initially, the plan is to introduce organ transplant services in one or two private hospitals, followed swiftly by government hospitals. The objective is to make organ transplants easily accessible to those in need.
The lack of an organ transplant ecosystem has led to long waiting periods for individuals requiring liver, kidney, and retina transplants, sometimes lasting several months or even years.
“The success of such an endeavour hinge on maintaining stringent hygiene standards, which can be challenging in government hospitals. However, with the collaboration between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government, and the establishment of super speciality hospitals, the opportunity arises for government medical colleges and hospitals to conduct transplants as well,” Sarma further said.
The CM stressed the necessity for varied levels of sophistication and the designation of specialty institutions for particular transplant procedures in order to ensure effective execution. A government hospital might, for instance, specialise in liver transplants while another might concentrate on kidney transplants, and so on.
The Medical Association and the Health Department have been requested to investigate the required legal framework to enable organ transplants, giving hope to numerous people awaiting life-saving surgeries.
