Srinagar’s Revamped Clock Tower Emerges As The City’s Newest Attraction

A historic transformation unfolded as the renowned ‘Ghanta Ghar’ Clock Tower, colloquially known as the Clock Tower, underwent a significant renovation as part of the Srinagar Smart City Project. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the rejuvenated landmark, illuminating it in the hues of the national flag, capturing the spirit of Independence Day.

The revitalized Clock Tower has garnered admiration from both locals and tourists alike, offering a fresh perspective on Srinagar’s iconic landscape.

Visitors have expressed their delight in witnessing the revamped tower, showcasing its enhanced allure.

“I have always heard about Lal Chowk, but today, I saw it. The renovated tower looks great and is a huge attraction among tourists. I am visiting Kashmir for the first time and am glad I visited the tower,” shared Mahesh Kumar, a Mumbai-based tourist.

A Prominent Gathering Spot

The Clock Tower has now evolved into a prominent gathering spot, providing a picturesque backdrop for visitors to capture memorable moments. Business owners in the vicinity anticipate a positive boost to tourism and commerce alike.

“Many people, especially tourists, visit this place in the evenings, take selfies and spend some time. This is a new attraction in the city after Polo View market. We are hopeful that our business will also get a boost,” noted Nazir Ahmad, a Kashmir Arts dealer in the area.

Enriching the Urban Experience

Sadiya, a local resident, lauds the transformation of the Clock Tower as an enriching addition to the urban fabric. The tower’s rejuvenation offers a refreshing change of scene and establishes itself as a potential hangout destination in the city.

“Revamping is good as it will be a change of scene for everyone. Earlier, the Polo View market was renovated and it has become very beautiful and has turned into a tourist hot spot,” shared Sadiya.

Balancing Commerce with Transformation

While the renovation journey posed challenges for the local business community, there is optimism that the Clock Tower’s new avatar will prove beneficial in the long run.

“The main question is the impact the renovation will have on businesses here. We are looking forward to positive effects on trade. Hope these changes don’t lead to only hangout stations but also help in the revival of business sentiment,” emphasized Umar Nazir Tibet Baqal, Joint Secretary General of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

The revitalized Ghanta Ghar Clock Tower stands as a testament to Srinagar’s commitment to urban development and cultural preservation.

As it reclaims its position as a prominent landmark, its newfound charm is poised to invigorate tourism, commerce, and local community engagement.
