We grew up listening and celebrating April Fools’ Day. We prank our friends, young kids, and even our elders healthily. We’re all aware that April Fool’s Day is celebrated on the first day of April. But do you know why it’s celebrated on that day? What is the origin of April Fools’ Day? 

It is difficult to trace the origins of this Day. However, based on the information available, the celebration has been observed in the United Kingdom for 200 years.

Significance of April fools’ day

The origin of April Fools’ Day is unknown, and there have been numerous theories proposed for the same. The most plausible theory, however, dates back to the late 16th century, when Pope Gregory XIII proposed using the Gregorian calendar. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, January 1 became the beginning of the year. It replaced the Julian calendar practice of beginning the year at the end of March. France was the first country to accept and put the new calendar into effect.

Despite the news being disseminated, some individuals were unaware of the change or refused to follow the new changes. They continued to observe the New year on April 1. Thus, people who followed the Gregorian calendar started mocking and ridiculing these people. The general takeaway was that those who refused to follow the new calendar were considered fools and made fun of by those who did. Thereby, giving rise to the tradition of April Fools’ Day on April 1.

In Scotland, the celebrations last two days, with the second day dubbed Taily Day. It is only used for pranks.  This process inspired the “kick me” sign.

Since 1986, there have been phony press releases for a non-existent April Fools’ Day Parade in New York. On April Fools’ Day, it is usual to refrain from playing practical jokes afternoon.
