Team Women India’s defeat against England: Anjum Chopra slams Indian side

After T20 World Cup loss to England, Anjum Chopra did not hesitate to slam India Women: “What was happening? I did not have a clue!”

Former cricketer Anjum Chopra did not mince words criticizing the Team Women India following their loss to England. This was just an elevan run defeat in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 clash at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Saturday. The former Indian women team skipper Anjum Chopra says 152 runs was an achievable target, but Harmanpreet Kaur and team displayed a week mindset with the bat.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first. Renuka Singh was successful with the ball hitting 5 wickets with giving just 15 runs. It was an exceptional bowling performance. However, Team Women India in their 20 overs could not stop England from recovering from 29/3 to post 151/7. India never looked chasing the target comfortably where only Smriti Mandhana (52 off 41) and Richa Ghosh (47* off 34) tried their best for the team but were finally in vain. The significant contributions of Richa, Smriti and Renuka did not prove to be enough to help Team Women India.

While reviewing Indian side’s loss against England, Chopra sounded critical of the Women in Blue. On her YouTube channel she voiced her heart:

“India did it against Pakistan chasing 150 runs. In the game against England, The batting conditions were good whereas India having a strong batting line-up was not weak at all. Thus the chasing was actually not too difficult. But what was happening? I just did not have a clue.”

“When Shafali Verma played that shot, I asked myself, ‘what kind of a stroke is that?’ What was the need of hitting the ball when it was above her head? This was not the first time, she did it. Jemimah Rodrigues also hit to the hands of the fielder.”

Chopra also said about India Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, ”What was the point taking on England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone going blindly after her.”

“Harmanpreet Kaur knew that she has struggled against Sophie Ecclestone and she has gotten her out many times. This time also she was sent packing again. Is the way you contribute in the chase?”
