A Ukrainian Citizen Sets Himself On Fire Outside Polish Consulate

A Ukrainian man lit himself on fire outside of his nation’s consulate in southern Poland on Thursday, said police, and was later taken to a hospital with serious burns.

According to press representative Piotr Szpiech, the incident occurred in the city of Krakow sometime before 8:00 am (0600 GMT), and the victim was 63 years old.

Szpiech said, “When he began saying something in Ukrainian while waiting in line outside the Ukrainian consulate, he pulled out a bottle of flammable liquid, sprayed himself with it, and lit himself on fire”.

“A patrol officer and a witness extinguished the fire. The man was taken to the hospital in a critical, life-threatening condition”, he continued.

Szpiech stated that he had no idea what the man had been yelling.

According to initial accounts in local media, the man had been inciting his fellow compatriots to return to Ukraine and fight Russia, which had invaded the country in February of last year.

However, a witness later stated, “He didn’t mention the war or Ukraine — just his personal grievances”.

“He said he had a problem with the consulate and that he wasn’t getting any help”, she added.
