Canada Assures India, Your Diplomats Are Secure

On Tuesday, India summoned Canada’s high commissioner Cameron Mackay to express its formal disapproval of Khalistan supporters’ targeting of top Indian diplomats.

The issue would be brought up with Canada, according to India’s foreign minister S. Jaishankar, who also warned that such actions would damage bilateral relations. In the meantime, Canada reassured India of the security of its diplomats in response to the online distribution of Khalistani posters that included Indian diplomats and condemned the “promotional material” spreading prior to a Khalistan rally as “unacceptable”.

Following Jaishankar’s remarks that India had advised its allies, including Canada, the UK, and the US, not to provide space to “extremist Khalistani ideology” because it was “not good” for relations, Melanie Joly of Canada made her statement.

She tweeted on Tuesday, “Canada takes its obligations under the Vienna Convention addressing the safety of diplomats extremely seriously.

Since some of the internet advertisements for a protest scheduled for July 8 are undesirable, Canada is still in regular contact with Indian authorities, Joly said.

Joly stressed that a small group of people “do not speak for an entire community or Canada” by their acts.

When questioned about the reports of Khalistani posters in Canada mentioning Indian diplomats, Jaishankar responded that the matter would be brought up with the Canadian authorities.
