Mount Merapi In Indonesia Erupts, Spewing A Lava Avalanche

Mount Merapi, Indonesia’s most active volcano, erupted on Tuesday, spilling lava more than two kilometres from the crater.

The government-run Merapi Volcano Observatory released dramatic photographs of lava streaming from the volcano’s smouldering crater.

According to the Centre for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG), a government organisation that monitors the volcano, dozens of minor tremors associated with Merapi’s eruption were recorded on Tuesday.

BPPTKG head Agus Budi Santoso said, “Merapi’s activity slightly increased over the last few days… but these kinds of increases often occur in Merapi”.

“People could see the eruption flowing from the volcano because of the clear weather”, he added.

The organisation closely monitors Merapi, which is only 28 kilometres (17 miles) north of the provincial capital Yogyakarta.

Following a danger assessment for the nearby communities, authorities created seven kilometres (four miles) limitation in 2022.

Santoso further said lava from Merapi’s Tuesday eruption fell well within that zone.

“Merapi’s alert level, which has been at the second-highest level since 2020 due to increased volcanic activity, has stayed unchanged”, Santoso added.

The volcano’s most recent significant eruption in 2010 killed over 300 people and necessitated the evacuation of 280,000 people.

It was Merapi’s most powerful eruption since 1930 when over 1,300 people died.
