White House Doctor: A Cancerous Lesion Removed From Joe Biden’s Chest

A skin lesion removed from President Joe Biden’s chest last month was a basal cell carcinoma — a common form of skin cancer — his doctors stated on March 3, 2023, adding that no further treatment was necessary.

Biden’s Recovery

All malignant tissue was successfully removed, according to Kevin O’Connor, the White House physician, and Mr. Biden’s longstanding doctor, at the President’s routine medical on February 16.

According to Dr. O’Connor, the area on Mr. Biden’s chest where the procedure was done has “healed nicely” and the President will keep getting frequent skin checks as part of his usual healthcare regimen.

When detected early, basal cells are among the most prevalent and easily treatable types of cancer. According to Dr. O’Connor, they are removed because they have a tendency to grow in size rather than spread widely as other cancers do.

Dr. O’Connor noted in his February 16 summary of the President’s health that Mr. Biden had “several localized non-melanoma skin cancers” removed from his body prior to taking office and that it was well known that Mr. Biden had a history of sun exposure in his youth.

Jill Biden, the first lady, had two basal cell lesions from her chest and right eye removed in January.

She stated that she is now “super cautious” about sunscreen, especially when she is at the beach, in an interview with the Associated Press last week.

Basal cell carcinoma is slow-growing cancer that typically only affects the skin’s surface. Doctors can almost always completely remove it with just a small incision, and it rarely has life-threatening or serious side effects.
