Chennai Vendor Sells Tomato At Rs 20 Amid Price Hike

All over India tomatoes are being sold at Rs 100 to 150, most of vendors are refraining from keeping tomatoes at their shops as customers are not ready to spend such hefty amount for such less quantity. Amid the soaring prices, a Cuddalore district vendor sold the vegetables at Rs 20 per Kg to celebrate the fourth anniversary of his shop.

D Rajesh, 38, bought 550kg of tomatoes from Bengaluru at 60 per kg (including the transportation cost) and sold it for 20 per kg. He owns D R vegetable and onion shop at Sellankuppam sold tomatoes at a loss of 40 per kg to help the poor and needy on the fourth anniversary of his shop.

“People were restricted to buy only one kg per person as I wanted as many people possible to benefit from the concession. The entire stock was sold in a few minutes. I established the shop after working for more than 30 years in my uncle’s shop. I revised the rate to 48 per kg on Saturday. Again, I made a brisk business selling more than 280kg of tomatoes on Saturday,” said Rajesh.

Rajesh sells vegetables at at a very low price on his shop anniversary. He revealed, “When I established the shop in 2019, onion prices were soaring above 100 per kg. But I sold it at 10 per kg as an opening offer.”
