UN Ambassador of India, Ruchira Kamboj
The UNGA resolution on Russia-Ukraine war witnessed 32 abstained members. India was also among the nations who chose to stay away from Aye or No. Indian envoy explains why India abstained from the vote.
Indian envoy to United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj quoted PM Modi while explaining the Indian stand. The United Nations General Assembly resolution was supported by 141 votes whereas 32 member countries abstained and seven countries opposed it too. India and China were among the absentees.
On Thursday 23rd of February India reiterated its stand on the Russia-Ukraine war. The Indian side said that diplomacy and dialogue are the only viable way out. Abstaining from UNGA voting approved a nonbinding resolution.
‘India calls for Russia to end hostilities’
India’s permanent representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj further said that it calls for Russia to stop hostilities in Ukraine withdrawing the army. The UN envoy also quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocating that “no solution can ever arrive at the cost of human lives”.
UNGA demands Moscow to immediately withdraw army
In the historic UNGA voting the assembly demanded Moscow to immediately withdraw its armed forces from Kyiv. It also made an appeal for the need to reach a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Draft with ‘Principles of the Charter of the UN’
A draft resolution was adopted in the 193-member General Assembly of United Nations which was put forward by Ukraine and its supporters. The draft was titled ‘Principles of the Charter of the UN underlining a just, comprehensive and long-lasting peace in the territory of Ukraine’.

Clarification of Indian stand by the envoy
“India, steadfastly as always remains committed to multilateralism upholding the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. India is always going to call for diplomacy and dialogue as the only viable way out. Taking note of the stated objective of today’s Resolution, India supports with all its inherent limitations the objective of reaching our desired goal of securing a lasting peace. India thus constrained to abstain,” as said by the Indian envoy, Ruchira Kamboj.
