Newly surfaced business records reveal that Elon Musk has set up a company specializing in artificial intelligence called X.AI Corporation, located in the state of Nevada in the United States. The records, uncovered on Friday, indicate that Musk is listed as the company’s director, and that it was founded on March 9th, according to the state’s business registration. This is in addition to his current positions as CEO of Tesla and Twitter, according to media sources.

On Friday, the media reported that billionaire Elon Musk is developing an artificial intelligence startup that will compete with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, according to insiders familiar with his plans.

Musk recently merged Twitter with a newly-formed entity called “X,” keeping the brand name but not the underlying business. This is seen as a potential rival to OpenAI, despite Musk’s earlier appeal to halt the development of AI. Moreover, Elon Musk has invested in robust computing processors and recruited engineering experts for an AI initiative at Twitter, according to reports. He took the step while simultaneously executing substantial cost-cutting measures, such as layoffs. Notably, the founding date of X.AI Corporation precedes Musk’s involvement in an open letter endorsing a six-month suspension of potent AI system development, published on the Future of Life Institute’s website, a project backed by Musk.

Corporations like Microsoft and Alphabet are striving to integrate Generative AI, the technology responsible for the widespread popularity of chatbots like ChatGPT, into their services. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, along with other prominent individuals, asserted that AI systems that possess human-like intelligence can present significant dangers to society and the human race.

Reportedly,  Musk has obtained numerous graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia Corp, which drive computing power for intensive activities like AI and high-end graphics. Nvidia did not offer any comment on the report, but its stock prices surged on Friday following the news.

Elon Musk has formed a new company called X.AI Corp in Nevada, as per state records. The company’s sole director is Musk himself, while the secretary is Jared Birchall, who serves as the managing director of Musk’s family office.

It is uncertain whether this firm is linked to Musk’s reported AI startup initiatives because he has not provided any relevant information yet. Musk was among the co-founders of OpenAI, which was first founded as a non-profit organization in 2015, but he resigned from the board of directors in 2018.
