Malini Patel, the alleged conman Kiran Patel’s wife, has been detained in connection with a brand-new lawsuit filed against them for defrauding an elderly person and attempting to seize their property.

After the alleged conman was detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police for pretending to be a senior official from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the first week of March, her arrest represents the State Police’s first move against Kiran Patel and his family.

On March 22, 2023, the Ahmedabad police crime branch filed a first information report (FIR) against the couple based on a complaint filed by Jagdish Chavda, the brother of former Gujarat minister and BJP leader Jawahar Chavda.

Conman Kiran and Malini Patel were charged under Indian Penal Code sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 170 (personating a public servant), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) (IPC).

According to the FIR, Jagdish Chavda was approached by the accused couple last year, when he advertised his bungalow for sale in Ahmedabad’s Shilaj neighborhood.

“Kiran Patel gained Chavda’s trust by claiming to work at the PMO and to be a co-owner of a popular cafe in Ahmedabad,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

“Patel also claimed to be a builder and promised to renovate Chavda’s house and help him sell it for a profit. Patel took Rs 35 lakh from Chavda in installments for this,” the police officer added.

“Chavda had to visit his hometown of Junagadh for some work while the renovations were being done. When he came back, he discovered Patel had added his own nameplate to the bungalow and even performed a “vastu puja” or house-warming ceremony,” the FIR read.

When confronted by Chavda, Patel left the bungalow and promised to return the 35 lakh rupees.

The officer said, “Chavda learned in August last year through a notice from the Ahmedabad district court that Patel had filed a civil suit claiming ownership of the property”.

“Malini Patel was apprehended on Tuesday in Jambusar, in the Bharuch district of Gujarat. She admitted to the police that she didn’t know what her husband did for a living after being questioned,” the officer added.

The officer further said, “She revealed that the pair had made some renovations to Chavda’s home and even invited people by handing out flyers for “Vastu Puja” while the owner was gone”.

Malini Patel is also charged with cheating in another case that was filed in 2019 in addition to this one, while her spouse is charged with fraud in four other cases.
