DRDO Successfully Launched “Agni Prime”, The New Generation Ballistic Missile From Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island

This was the first pre-induction night launch conducted by the users after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system.

Lauching of Agni Prime

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden pre-induction night launch of the new generation ballistic missile “Agni Prime” on Wednesday at around 7:30 p.m. from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, according to a DRDO statement on Thursday. According to the official announcement, all   objectives were successfully proved during the flying test.

This was the first pre-induction night launch conducted by the users after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system.

DRDO shared the news via Twitter

“First Pre-Induction night launch of New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni Prime was successfully conducted off the coast of Odisha on 07 June 2023,” tweeted DRDO.


In order to gather flight data covering the whole trajectory of the vehicle, range instrumentation including radar, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems were placed at various sites, including two down-range ships, at the terminal point, according to the statement.

The technology was introduced into the Armed Forces as a result of the successful flight test, which was observed by senior officials from DRDO and Strategic Forces Command.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh elated with the success

Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister of India congratulated DRDO and the Armed Forces for the success as well as the copy-book performance of the New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni Prime.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary Department of Defence R&D & Chairman DRDO appreciated the efforts put in by the teams of DRDO laboratories and the users involved in the test launch.

Senior officials from the organisation and Strategic Forces Command witnessed the successful flight test, which has paved the way for induction of the system into the Indian Armed Forces.
