Khonoma, often referred to be Asia’s first green village, is currently listed as one of India’s top 50 tourist sites. Temjen Imna Along, the minister of tourism and higher education, revealed this when visiting the area on Wednesday.

Speaking at a celebration in his honour held at Terhotsiese, Khonoma Community Hall, Along said the tourism ministry chose Khonoma village as one of the 50 tourist sites in the Tourism Challenge Mode project because it saw potential in the community.

Along with representatives from the Khonoma Youth Organisation, Khonoma Village Council, and Khonoma Eco Tourism Committee, Salhoutuono Kruse, the minister for Horticulture and Woman Resource Development, welcomed Along earlier.

It may be mentioned that Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman had announced while presenting the Union Budget 2023-24 on February 1 this year that at least 50 destinations would be selected and developed as a complete package of tourism.
She had said that these destinations would be selected through challenge mode, using an integrated and innovative approach, while the focus of development of tourism would be on domestic as well as foreign tourists.
She had also proposed to launch an app in which all relevant aspects of the tourist destinations would be made available, in addition to aspects such as physical connectivity, virtual connectivity, tourist guides, high standards of food streets and tourist security, to enhance tourist experience.
To strengthen domestic tourism, sector-specific skilling would be done and entrepreneurship development would be dovetailed to achieve the objectives of the “Dekho Apna Desh” initiative, the budget had proposed.
Also, tourist infrastructure and amenities would be facilitated under the Vibrant Villages Programme to encourage tourism in border villages.
In a tweet, Salhoutuono Kruse, thanked Imna Along for identifying the village as one of the 50 tourist destinations of the country.
