An avalanche struck the 17th mile close to Changu this afternoon at approximately 12.20 p.m., Seven tourists, including a toddler, lost their lives in the avalanche. Approximately 150 people are trapped at the tourist destination.

According to the police, a massive rescue operation has been launched in the affected area. Nathula Pass, located on the border with China, is a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty. The Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army has joined the search and rescue operation at the Nathu La border.

The police said, “More than 150 tourists are still stranded in the avalanche-ravaged region. Meanwhile, 30 other travelers who became trapped under the snow have been rescued and are being treated at a hospital in Sikkim”.

PMO offered condolences on the loss of lives in the avalanche in Sikkim. It tweeted, “Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected: PM@narendramodi”, through its official Twitter handle.

Union home minister Amit Shah tweeted, “My sincerest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim. We are closely monitoring the situation and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured”, through his official Twitter handle.

After the snow was cleared from the road, approximately 350 stranded tourists were also rescued.
