Swati Maliwal, the chairman of the Delhi Commission for Women, said on Saturday that her father sexually abused her when she was a child.

Maliwal said she used to hide under her bed out of fear when she was younger, speaking after the DCW honored around 100 women with awards.

“When I was a child, my father sexually abused me. He used to beat me up, and I would hide under the bed”, the chairman of the Delhi Commission for Women said.

Further, she said, “I used to plan as a child how I would teach such men who abuse women and children a lesson, and how I could help women get what they deserve”.

Maliwal claimed her father would grab her hair and slam her against the wall, causing serious injuries. “This went on until I was in fourth grade when we left him”, she explained.

According to the DCW chief, when a person faces such challenges in life, they are able to understand the pain of others and become passionate enough to change the system.

“I believe the same thing happened to me, and I’m sure our other awardees have a similar story. “Our awardees have inspired us to live life positively in the face of adversity”, Swati Maliwal added.

The awards were given to those who have demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment to women’s empowerment.
