After a month since violence broke out in Manipur between Meitei and Kuki communities which led to a protest rally by All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur on May 3 against the demand for including Meiteis in Schedule Tribe. The violence resulted in 98 deaths and 310 people injured. People from both the communities had to take refuge in Manipur or places which are far away from their home. Curfew is imposed in the area which is lifted for a few hours during day and for a month people are surviving here without internet connectivity.
Basic Necessities price doubled
The major repercussions of the Manipur violence is the shortage of essential commodities of daily need. When the authorities blocked the National Highway 2, which prevented trucks from entering Imphal, the price of commodities doubled overnight. Price of rice went up from Rs 30 to Rs 60, onions cost Rs 70 which earlier costed Rs 35, potatoes increased from Rs 15 to Rs 40.
Petrol Prices rise at Rs 200
Not just food, but a month long violence in Manipur has affected the price of petrol as well. The cost of petrol in Manipur is Rs 200 in black market as most of the petrol pumps have run out of fuel. There has been a scarcity of medicines after the National Highway was blocked.
Action will be taken against rebels
As the ATM’s have run out of cash, hence increasing the plight of Manipuris. The people are not able to buy things of basic necessity because the interet shut down has eliminated the option of digital payment. Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Manipur and warned rebels that that if anyone if seen carrying arms action will be taken against them.
