Violence broke out in Maharashtra's Akola

A violent clash broke out between two groups over a minor dispute in the Old City police area of Maharashtra’s Akola on Saturday evening, according to the police officials.

Several videos of the clash surfaced on the internet, which showed members of the two groups throwing stones at each other, damaging vehicles and creating a ruckus on the streets.

Two-three persons were injured in the incident which took place at around 11.30 pm on Saturday in the sensitive Old City area, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Monika Raut said, adding that one person was also feared dead in the violence.

Members of the two groups pelted stones at each other. Some vehicles were also damaged in the incident, she said.

Police used tear gas to disperse the rioters and the situation was now under control, the official said.

Deputy CM Fadnavis appeals to maintain peace

Moreover, Maharashtra Deputy State Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the guardian minister of Akola district, was monitoring the situation and appealed to people to maintain peace.

The police officials said that the situation is under control now.

Section 144 imposed

The incident prompted the administration to issue prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC. “Following the violent clashes Section 144 has been imposed in the city,” Akola Collector Neema Arora said.

According to the police, the violent mob has damaged some vehicles.

Reportedly, a large crowd marched to the Old City police station after a violent incident arose over a minor dispute. The violent mob targeted some vehicles in the area and the police used force to bring the situation under control, official sources said.

This is the second such incident reported in Akola in recent days. A few days ago, there was a violent clash between two groups in the Shankar Nagar locality of the Akot File area.
