To put the record straight, this is how the UPA clearly signaled its ultra-soft approach towards terror: Barely, four months after assuming power, the UPA hastily repealed POTA (Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act) which had emerged as one of the most crucial deterrents against homegrown terror activities.

Secondly, while the role of Pakistan was well established in almost all terror attacks, the UPA government never explored punitive action such as surgical or retaliatory strikes against Pakistan, sending a clear message of India being a soft state.Instead after every terror strike, the UPA government’s first reaction would be to complain in a child-like manner to the USA and draw international attention- a strategy that failed time and again.

Moreover, if one is to believe WikiLeaks’ story, then around the same time when India suffered some of the worst terror strikes, Rahul Gandhi is reported to have told the US ambassador to India that “Hindu extremism poses the greatest threat to the country.”

The Congress and Its Vote Bank Politics

In fact, even after the 26/11 attacks, the Congress did not give up its vote bank politics- Digvijay Singh went on to release a spurious book- “26/11- RSS ki saazish”-a clear attempt to give a clean chit to Pakistan and homegrown terror groups.With such glaring evidence of the Congress’ soft approach towards terror and its duplicity, why should anybody be surprised by PM Modi calling out the Congress’ notoriety on the issue? The Congress, of course, had no answer except the uncouth Ravaan jibe in retaliation.

Since the occasion is the Gujarat Assembly Elections, it may be apt to explain the Congress’ obsession with minority appeasement, with an example from the early 1950s, around an event in Gujarat.

In 1951, the then-President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, was invited to inaugurate the newly reconstructed Somnath Temple in Gujarat. This temple had been ravaged umpteen times by invaders, hence its restoration in independent India was a special historic occasion.

PM Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to the President asking him to reconsider, saying that the “President of a secular country doing this has a number of implications.” Nehru’s opposition notwithstanding, Dr Rajendra Prasad stood his ground and went ahead with the temple inauguration, but upon Nehru’s insistence, he had to do it in Dr Prasad’s personal capacity and the government machinery was kept out of it.

It is very clear thus that Nehru’s idea of secularism was an apologetic retreat of majority sentiments. Over the succeeding decades, under the watch of the imported Gandhis, this apologetic retreat metamorphosed into subservient acceptance of minority domination- the main reason why the UPA could never crush terror activities with an iron hand.
