The encounter between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping outside of the Johannesburg summit is the center of attention. The two leaders got together on Tuesday at the Leaders' Retreat with other BRICS leaders.

The group of nations known as BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — represents a quarter of the world’s economy.

PM Modi will attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, which gets underway on Tuesday and will culminate on August 24.

Harbinder Singh Sethi said, "We are very happy that PM Modi is coming to South Africa. We expect the relationship between India and South Africa to deepen after this BRICS Summit."

This will be the first in-person BRICS Summit after three consecutive years of virtual meetings owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"My heartiest congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the BRICS business council. In the last 10 years, the BRICS Business Council has played a vital role in enhancing our economic cooperation," PM Modi said.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized a message reflecting the global reluctance to rely on China as the "factory of the world" by calling for the creation of a robust and inclusive supply chain.

BRICS is an acronym for the grouping of the world’s leading emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
