Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) has ignited enthusiasm for women’s cricket in India, drawing up to 50 million viewers during its inaugural week, even in rural areas like Dharoki village in Punjab.
Harmanpreet Kaur, a local legend from Punjab and captain of India’s national team, is inspiring a new generation of female cricketers and challenging gender norms despite initial challenges.
Punjab Police Constable Gulab Singh Shergill. seeing potential in his daughter and other girls in Dharoki, converted his one-acre farm into a cricket training ground. providing coaching to 18 girls.
Shergill, a former farmer with his own cricket dreams. invested his salary and farming earnings into the girls’ training. Seven of his trainees have already been selected for the district’s Under-15 team.
The success of the girls and Shergill’s dedication are bringing recognition to Dharoki and contributing to the growing momentum of women’s cricket in India.
