India's influence on the world stage has significantly increased as a result of its position as the de facto head of the so-called Global South, a collective phrase for emerging and developing nations that do not support any particular big power bloc.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida has mentioned "stronger involvement in the Global South" as a key issue at the summit. He uses the term very often at news conferences.

 India has been a regular guest of the G7 and Japan, which is hosting the G7 this year and has invited India as the guest country.
