Relations between India and the area date back to the early 19th century colonial era, when many Indians were transported to the area by British colonists as indentured plantation labour.

Members of the initiative have also promised to strengthen ties with the Pacific Islands Forum and promote regionalism in the Pacific.

During his visit to Papua New Guinea, PM Modi co-chaired the 3rd India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit with the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, James Marape on Monday, Vinay Kwatra said.
