The President of Sri Lanka stated that the recent restart of the Chennai and Jaffna flight service was a significant step towards air connectivity.

Speaking to the media after holding talks with Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, PM Modi said they agreed on enhancing air connectivity between the two countries.

External Affairs S Jaishankar called on the Sri Lankan President yesterday and expressed confidence that his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi will strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

Sri Lanka is an important partner in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR. The visit has reinforced the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that both India and Sri Lanka agreed to develop Trincomalee city in Sri Lanka as the regional hub during the talks as both sides laid emphasis on establishing high-grid connectivity between the two nations.

Mr Wickremesinghe arrived in New Delhi on Thursday and was welcomed by Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan.

India's government-run NTPC is developing a 100-megawatt solar power facility in the Trincomalee area.

He said that there were speculations about the China-run Hambantota harbour which he admitted that it “has been given out to China Merchants, but its security is controlled by the Sri Lankan government”.

Cabinet Minister Jeevan Thondaman is among the few who will accompany the Sri Lankan President to India.
