History of Republic Day

India became an independent country on August 15, 1947. At that point, India lacked a constitution of its own. The majority of its legislation was based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935.

A separate resolution was then passed on August 29, 1947, to designate the drafting committee. This group was in charge of drafting a permanent constitution for our nation.

Dr B.R. Ambedkar was selected as the chairman who led India into a new era of triumph and glory. Therefore, Republic Day celebrates the adoption of the Indian Constitution.
