Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has officially announced his attendance at the upcoming G20 summit, set to take place in New Delhi next month. The event will bring together leaders from G-20 nations, gathering under India’s presidency in September.
The G20 serves as the foremost global platform for economic collaboration. In this year’s summit, leaders will direct their focus towards steering the global economy back onto a trajectory of robust, sustainable, and resilient growth. This directive was highlighted in a statement issued by the Australian PM’s office.
Albanese’s participation marks a significant step in deepening Australia’s engagement with Southeast Asia, a pivotal priority for his government.
Recognizing the interdependence of their futures, Albanese emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
“Australia is invested in and committed to the Indo-Pacific to enhance growth and prosperity, stability and respect for sovereignty and lasting peace,” stated Albanese.
As a testament to this commitment, Australia will be hosting a Special Summit in 2024 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations.
“I look forward to welcoming ASEAN leaders to Australia in March next year,” Albanese expressed.
During September, Albanese’s itinerary includes visits to Indonesia, the Philippines, and India.
These engagements will offer opportunities for discussions with regional leaders, addressing global challenges, and advancing Australia’s interests in economics, security, and climate action.
Scheduled for September 6-7, Albanese will attend the 3rd Annual ASEAN-Australia Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit in Jakarta.
These gatherings underscore Australia’s strong partnership with ASEAN, playing a vital role in promoting mutual prosperity, security, and peace in the region.
In a move that marks historical significance, Albanese will embark on a bilateral visit to the Philippines, becoming the first Australian Prime Minister to do so since 2003.
His meeting with Philippines President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr on September 8 will delve into matters of defense and maritime security, development, and education.
“Our partnership with the Philippines is built on close defence and security cooperation, increasing economic relations and warm personal ties, including through the vibrant Filipino-Australian community. I look forward to visiting Manila to meet with President Marcos and affirm our partnership,” expressed Albanese.
India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, 2022, setting the stage for the forthcoming summit in New Delhi.
